enVision Mathematics Grade 1, Topic 7: Extend the Counting Sequence

In this unit, first graders count to 120 starting from any number, by ones and by tens. They read and write numerals, the written symbols for numbers, up to 120 and look for patterns on a number chart. After the last unit's work with data, it shifts back to number, and these patterns set up place value next: what each digit in a number is worth.

Sample questions to try together

These are real questions from our practice. Tap the speaker to hear one read aloud, or the light bulb for a hint, and talk about the answer together.

Question 1 of 3

Count by tens: 10, 20, 30, 40, __. What number comes next?

  • 51
  • 50
  • 60

How you can help

  1. Start a counting game from an unusual number while you wait in line, like 96, and go as far as 120. Take turns saying the next number.
  2. Read house numbers, price tags, and page numbers aloud together, and ask your child to write a few of them down. Check the ones past 100 especially.
  3. Count a pile of pasta by making groups of ten first, then count by tens and ones to find the total. Ask what number would come right after it.

Where kids can get stuck

  • Saying "79, 70-10" instead of moving on to 80 at the end of a decade.
  • Counting on past 100 as "100, 200, 300" instead of 101, 102, 103.
  • Writing 61 for sixteen because the word starts with the sound of six.
