enVision Mathematics Grade 1, Topic 8: Understand Place Value
In this unit, first graders learn place value, the idea that a digit's spot tells what it is worth, so 34 is 3 tens and 4 ones. They show numbers with bundles of ten and loose sticks and begin to compare them. It builds on counting and writing numbers to 120 from the last unit, and leads into comparing two-digit numbers with symbols next.

What is my child learning in Topic 8?
- Showing two-digit numbers as tens and ones, like 52 as 5 tens and 2 ones, and knowing 60 is 6 tens and no ones. Learn more: Tens and ones in two-digit numbers
- Using tens and ones to tell which of two numbers is greater, starting with the tens. Learn more: Comparing two-digit numbers with >, =, and <
Sample questions to try together

Question 1 of 3
What number is 3 tens and 4 ones?
- 43
- 34
- 7
How you can help
- Bundle straws or craft sticks into tens with rubber bands, then show a number like 43 with 4 bundles and 3 loose sticks. Swap roles and let your child pick the number.
- Point to a two-digit number on a sign or receipt and ask what each digit stands for: "In 72, the 7 means 7 tens, or 70."
- Build two numbers with bundles, like 38 and 51, and ask which is greater. Compare the bundles first, then the loose sticks.
Where kids can get stuck
- Showing 34 as 3 sticks and 4 sticks, reading the 3 as three ones.
- Reading or writing 60 as 6, treating the zero as nothing.
- Deciding 29 is greater than 41 because 9 is bigger than 1.
Practice makes perfect
Bobby's Math Club has practice problems that adapt to your child’s level, each with a detailed explanation and an easy-to-follow video, so your child can build confidence in these skills one step at a time.
Words your child will hear
- place value
- What a digit is worth because of its spot, like the 4 in 42 meaning 40.
- digit
- One of the symbols 0 to 9 used to write numbers.
- tens
- Groups of ten. In 34, there are 3 tens.
- ones
- Single things not in a group of ten. In 34, there are 4 ones.
- two-digit number
- A number with a tens digit and a ones digit, like 57.
- greater
- Bigger in amount.
- less
- Smaller in amount.
