Eureka Math² Grade 1, Module 1: Counting, Comparison, and Addition
In this unit, first graders count and compare groups and begin adding with strategies. They count on from the bigger number, add in any order, and grow quicker with facts within 10 and 20. Story problems ask them to put groups together and compare them. This opens the year, and next they look at how adding and subtracting are related, so one fact helps solve another.

What is my child learning in Module 1?
- Solving stories that put groups together or compare them, like how many more blue cubes there are than red ones. Learn more: Adding and subtracting story problems within 20
- Adding in either order, like 2 + 8 or 8 + 2, and choosing whichever is easier to count on from. Learn more: Adding in any order to make it easier
- Counting on from the bigger addend, the number being added, such as saying 10, 11, 12 for 9 + 3. Learn more: Counting on and back to add and subtract
- Building quick recall of facts within 10 and starting to add within 20 with doubles and tens. Learn more about adding within 20: Adding within 20 · Learn more about subtracting within 20
Sample questions to try together
These are real questions from our practice. Tap the speaker to hear one read aloud, or the light bulb for a hint, and talk about the answer together.
Question 1 of 3
I had some toy cars. My friend gave me 3 more cars. Now I have 8 cars in total. How many toy cars did I have at first?
- 3
- 5
- 8
How you can help
- Compare two piles on the table, like 8 forks and 5 spoons, by matching them up in pairs. Ask how many more forks there are and how they can tell.
- Roll two dice and add, always starting from the bigger number and counting on. Take turns and check each other's counting.
- Ask turnaround questions as you walk: "What's 2 + 8? What's 8 + 2?" Notice together that the total stays the same.
Where kids can get stuck
- Counting on from 2 to solve 2 + 9 instead of starting at the 9.
- Saying "9, 10" for 9 + 2 and answering 10, counting the starting number as a step.
- Treating "more" as a signal to add when a story asks how many more one group has.
Practice makes perfect
Bobby's Math Club has practice problems that adapt to your child’s level, each with a detailed explanation and an easy-to-follow video, so your child can build confidence in these skills one step at a time.
Words your child will hear
- count on
- Start at one number and count up to add.
- compare
- Look at two things to see which is bigger, longer, or the same.
- addend
- A number being added, like 3 and 4 in 3 + 4.
- sum
- The answer when you add, like 7 in 3 + 4 = 7.
- turnaround fact
- The same addends in the other order, like 3 + 5 and 5 + 3.
- how many more
- A question asking how much bigger one amount is than another.
- doubles
- A number added to itself, like 6 + 6.
