Eureka Math² Grade 2, Module 6: Shapes, Fractions, and Time

In this unit, the year closes with shapes, fractions, and time. Your child names shapes by their sides, angles, and faces, splits rectangles into rows of equal squares, and divides shapes into halves, thirds, and fourths. They also tell time to the nearest five minutes, where the clock face becomes a circle in equal parts. Fractions and area grow from here in 3rd grade.

Sample questions to try together

These are real questions from our practice. Tap the speaker to hear one read aloud, or the light bulb for a hint, and talk about the answer together.

Question 1 of 3

The hour hand is on the 8 and the minute hand is on the 12. What is the time?

  • 12:40
  • 8:00
  • 8:12

How you can help

  1. Cover a placemat or a book with sticky notes or playing cards in neat rows, and ask how many fit and how your child counted.
  2. Fold a paper plate into fourths and ask your child to color one fourth, then show you a half of the plate.
  3. Ask your child to tell the time on a clock with hands at breakfast and at bedtime, and to say whether it is a.m. or p.m.

Where kids can get stuck

  • Calling three unequal pieces thirds just because there are three of them.
  • Counting tiles in no order, skipping some and counting others twice.
  • Refusing to call an uneven six-sided shape a hexagon because it doesn't look like the usual one.

Practice makes perfect

Bobby's Math Club has practice problems that adapt to your child’s level, each with a detailed explanation and an easy-to-follow video, so your child can build confidence in these skills one step at a time.
