Eureka Math Grade 2, Module 8: Time Shapes and Fractions as Equal Shares
In this unit, the year ends with time, shapes, and equal shares. Your child names and draws shapes by their sides, angles, and faces, then splits circles and rectangles into halves, thirds, and fourths. They link those fourths to the clock, where a quarter past is 15 minutes, and tell time to the nearest five minutes. Fractions build from here in 3rd grade.

What is my child learning in Module 8?
- Telling time to the nearest five minutes and connecting half past and quarter past to halves and fourths of the clock. Learn more: Telling time to the nearest five minutes
- Building and drawing triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, hexagons, and cubes from a description of their sides and angles. Learn more: Naming triangles, hexagons, cubes, and more
- Splitting circles and rectangles into equal shares, naming halves, thirds, and fourths, and seeing that equal shares can look different. Learn more: Halves, thirds, and fourths of shapes
Sample questions to try together

Question 1 of 3
The hour hand is on the 8 and the minute hand is on the 12. What is the time?
- 12:40
- 8:00
- 8:12
How you can help
- Ask what time it is at quarter past or half past the hour on a clock with hands, and point to the quarter or half of the clock face.
- Build shapes from straws or craft sticks and ask how many sides and angles each one has before you name it together.
- Fold a square of paper in half two different ways, once into rectangles and once into triangles, and ask whether both ways make halves.
Where kids can get stuck
- Believing two halves cut different ways cannot both be halves, such as a triangle half and a rectangle half.
- Naming the next hour when the hour hand is almost there, reading 8:45 as 9:45.
- Losing count of sides by starting and stopping at different corners and counting one twice.
Practice makes perfect
Bobby's Math Club has practice problems that adapt to your child’s level, each with a detailed explanation and an easy-to-follow video, so your child can build confidence in these skills one step at a time.
Words your child will hear
- half
- One of two equal shares of a whole.
- third
- One of three equal shares of a whole.
- fourth
- One of four equal shares of a whole, also called a quarter.
- equal shares
- Parts of a whole that are all exactly the same size.
- quarter past
- Fifteen minutes after the hour, when the minute hand points to the 3.
- angle
- The corner where two sides of a shape meet.
- face
- A flat side of a solid shape. A cube has 6 faces.
- hexagon
- A flat shape with 6 straight sides and 6 angles.
- quadrilateral
- Any flat shape with 4 straight sides and 4 angles.
