Eureka Math Grade 2, Module 7: Problem Solving with Length Money and Data

In this unit, your child uses measurement in real problems. They solve story problems about length and money, add and subtract on number lines, and read the time. They make picture graphs, bar graphs, and line plots, and count dollars and coins. It draws on everything from earlier in the year, and the clock work continues in the final part of 2nd grade.

Sample questions to try together

These are real questions from our practice. Tap the speaker to hear one read aloud, or the light bulb for a hint, and talk about the answer together.

Question 1 of 3

A piece of yarn is 40 cm long. If you add another 30 cm piece to it, what is the total length of the yarn?

  • 10 cm
  • 70 cm
  • 60 cm

How you can help

  1. Count the coins in a jar or pocket together, then make up a story: "If a snack costs 65 cents, how much would be left?"
  2. Measure everyone's hand span in inches, then plot the lengths with Xs on a line drawn on paper and ask which span is most common.
  3. Ask friends or family a quick question, like their favorite season, and help your child turn the answers into a bar graph.

Where kids can get stuck

  • Counting four mixed coins as 4 cents instead of adding up their values.
  • Drawing bars of uneven widths, or starting them at different heights, on a bar graph.
  • Recording a pencil a little over 5 inches as 6 inches on a line plot.

Practice makes perfect

Bobby's Math Club has practice problems that adapt to your child’s level, each with a detailed explanation and an easy-to-follow video, so your child can build confidence in these skills one step at a time.

Words your child will hear

bar graph
A graph that uses bars of different lengths to show and compare amounts.
picture graph
A graph that uses small pictures to show how many are in each group.
line plot
A number line with an X above it for each measurement collected.
data
Information collected by counting, measuring, or asking questions.
dollar
Money worth 100 cents, written with the $ sign, like $1.
