Eureka Math Grade 2, Module 6: Foundations of Multiplication and Division

In this unit, your child explores equal groups. They arrange objects in arrays, which are equal rows and columns, add the rows to find a total, and split rectangles into rows of same-size squares. They also learn to tell odd numbers from even ones. This lays the groundwork for multiplication and division, and it comes before problem solving with length, money, and data.

Sample questions to try together

These are real questions from our practice. Tap the speaker to hear one read aloud, or the light bulb for a hint, and talk about the answer together.

Question 1 of 3

Is 16 an even or odd number?

  • Even
  • Odd
  • Neither

How you can help

  1. Arrange crackers or blocks into rows, such as 4 rows of 3, and ask your child to write the addition for the rows.
  2. Draw a rectangle on paper and ask your child to split it into 2 rows of 5 squares, then count the squares by rows.
  3. Count the stairs or steps on a walk by 2s and ask whether the total is odd or even. Then count a set with one extra step.

Where kids can get stuck

  • Adding the number of rows to the number of columns, answering 7 for 3 rows of 4.
  • Leaving gaps or overlaps when tiling a rectangle, then counting as if it were covered exactly.
  • Thinking every small number is even and every big number is odd.

Practice makes perfect

Bobby's Math Club has practice problems that adapt to your child’s level, each with a detailed explanation and an easy-to-follow video, so your child can build confidence in these skills one step at a time.

Words your child will hear

array
Objects arranged in equal rows and columns.
row
A line of objects going across.
column
A line of objects going up and down.
repeated addition
Adding the same number again and again, like 4 + 4 + 4.
equal groups
Groups that all have the same number of objects.
odd
A number that can't be split into pairs without one left over, like 7.
even
A number that can be split into pairs with none left over, like 8.
same-size
Exactly equal in size, with no piece bigger or smaller than another.

Which math standards does Eureka Math Grade 2 Module 6 cover?

Eureka Math Grade 2 Module 6 covers these math standards. Each one links to what it means, sample questions, and teaching strategies.

  • 2.OA.C.3: Determine whether a group of objects (up to 20) has an odd or even number of members.
  • 2.OA.C.4: Use addition to find the total number of objects arranged in rectangular arrays.
  • 2.G.A.2: Partition a rectangle into rows and columns of same-size squares.
