Go Math! Grade 1, Chapter 9: Measurement
In this unit, first graders compare and order lengths, measure with everyday same-size objects like paper clips, and tell time to the hour and half hour. They learn that units must touch end to end and that the short hand shows the hour. After two-digit adding in the last unit, this uses counting in a new way, and next they collect and show data.

What is my child learning in Chapter 9?
- Ordering three objects by length and comparing two lengths indirectly by measuring each with a third object. Learn more: Ordering three things from shortest to longest
- Measuring with paper clips or cubes end to end, with no gaps or overlaps, and telling the length as a number of units. Learn more: Measuring length by lining up same-size objects
- Telling time to the hour and half hour on clocks with hands and digital clocks, and writing it both ways. Learn more: Telling time to the hour and half hour
Sample questions to try together
These are real questions from our practice. Tap the speaker to hear one read aloud, or the light bulb for a hint, and talk about the answer together.
Question 1 of 3
Which object is usually the longest?
- A book
- A bus
- A shoe
How you can help
- Measure the table with spoons laid end to end, then measure it again with forks. Ask why the number of spoons and forks is different.
- Line up three stuffed animals or books from shortest to tallest, starting each one on the same line. Ask which one is in the middle.
- Point out the clock at bedtime or snack time on the hour and half hour, and ask your child to read it and write it down.
Where kids can get stuck
- Counting a paper clip that hangs well past the end of the object.
- Putting the middle-length object at one end when ordering three.
- Reading 7:30 as 8:30 because the short hand is near the 8.
Practice makes perfect
Bobby's Math Club has practice problems that adapt to your child’s level, each with a detailed explanation and an easy-to-follow video, so your child can build confidence in these skills one step at a time.
