Go Math! Grade 1, Chapter 10: Represent Data

In this unit, first graders collect data, or information, by asking questions and counting answers. They sort it into up to three categories and show it with tally charts, picture graphs, and bar graphs. Then they read the graphs to find totals and how many more or fewer. After measurement in the last unit, this uses counting to answer real questions, and next they study solid shapes.

Question 1 of 3

The bar graph shows students' favorite fruits. How many students chose bananas as their favorite fruit?

A bar graph with three bars, each with its number printed above it. Apples: 4. Bananas: 5. Oranges: 3.
  • 4
  • 3
  • 5

How you can help

  1. Ask family and friends a question with three answers, like their favorite season, and keep tally marks. Count the tallies by fives together.
  2. Turn the tallies into a bar graph on paper, coloring one square for each vote. Ask which category has the fewest votes.
  3. Sort a basket of toys or socks into three groups and ask how many there are altogether and how many fewer are in the smallest group.

Where kids can get stuck

  • Reading the tallest bar's number when asked how many more it has than another bar.
  • Miscounting bundled tally marks, counting the slash in a group of five as a sixth.
  • Adding only two groups when asked how many there are in all three categories.

Practice makes perfect

Bobby's Math Club has practice problems that adapt to your child’s level, each with a detailed explanation and an easy-to-follow video, so your child can build confidence in these skills one step at a time.
