Go Math! Grade 2, Chapter 10: Data

In this unit, your child collects data, information gathered by asking questions or measuring, and shows it in tally charts, picture graphs, bar graphs, and line plots. They read each graph to answer how many in all and how many more. It uses the measuring from the last two parts of the year and leads into shapes and fractions next.

Sample questions to try together

These are real questions from our practice. Tap the speaker to hear one read aloud, or the light bulb for a hint, and talk about the answer together.

Question 1 of 3

Sarah measured the length of her crayons. She found lengths of 5 inches, 6 inches, 5 inches, 7 inches, and 6 inches. How many crayons were 5 inches long?

How you can help

  1. Take a quick survey of family or friends, such as favorite breakfast, and help your child make tally marks and then a bar graph.
  2. Measure a few toy cars or pencils to the nearest inch and draw a line plot together, with an X for each one.
  3. Make a picture graph together of the fruit in the kitchen, then ask questions about it, like "How many more apples than bananas are there?"

Where kids can get stuck

  • Drawing picture graph symbols in different sizes, so one row looks bigger than it really is.
  • Adding the two bars when asked how many more one category has.
  • Spacing the numbers unevenly on a line plot, or skipping a number nobody measured.

Practice makes perfect

Bobby's Math Club has practice problems that adapt to your child’s level, each with a detailed explanation and an easy-to-follow video, so your child can build confidence in these skills one step at a time.
