Go Math! Kindergarten, Chapter 4: Represent Count and Write Number 10
In this unit, the number 10 gets attention of its own because it matters so much. Your child counts and builds groups of 10, fills a ten-frame, a grid of 10 boxes, and writes 10, a number with two digits. Following the work with 6 to 9, this prepares your child for the next unit, where groups are joined together to add.

What is my child learning in Chapter 4?
- Writing 10 with a 1 and a 0, and using it to record a group of ten objects. Learn more: Writing numbers from 0 to 20
- Seeing that 10 is one more than 9, and that a full ten-frame always holds exactly 10. Learn more: How counting tells you how many
- Counting out exactly 10 objects in a row, in a circle, or scattered on a table, and checking with a ten-frame. Learn more: Counting groups of up to 20 things
Sample questions to try together

Question 1 of 3
How many apples do you see?
- 9
- 7
- 8
How you can help
- Count 10 toes and 10 fingers together, then ask your child to find 10 of something else, such as spoons or socks.
- Draw a ten-frame, two rows of five boxes, on paper and let your child fill it with toys, saying 'one more' each time until it is full.
- Line up 9 stuffed animals, add one more, and ask your child how many there are now without counting again.
Where kids can get stuck
- Writing 10 as 01, or only writing the 1, not yet sure how a two-digit number goes.
- Recounting all 10 objects after adding the last one, instead of knowing 9 and one more is 10.
- Counting a scattered group of 10 and getting 9 or 11, because they lost track of what was counted.
Practice makes perfect
Bobby's Math Club has practice problems that adapt to your child’s level, each with a detailed explanation and an easy-to-follow video, so your child can build confidence in these skills one step at a time.
