i-Ready Classroom Mathematics Grade 2, Unit 1: Numbers Within 20 and Data
In this unit, the year starts with addition and subtraction facts within 20 and with data. Your child uses strategies like making ten and doubles, solves story problems, and makes picture graphs and bar graphs, then uses them to answer questions. The facts work prepares your child for adding and subtracting within 100 next.

Question 1 of 3
What is 80 minus 20?
- 50
- 60
- 70
How you can help
- Ask family members their favorite snack, make a bar graph together, and ask how many more chose one snack than another.
- Play a doubles game on a walk or ride: you say a number up to 10, your child doubles it, then adds one more.
- Make a quick story with toys: 12 cars in the box, 5 rolled away. Ask how many are left, then ask for the matching addition fact.
Where kids can get stuck
- Starting the bars on a bar graph at different heights, so some look bigger than they are.
- Giving the total when asked how many more, saying 13 when one group has 8 and the other has 5.
- Counting up from 1 for every fact instead of using a known fact like a double.
Practice makes perfect
Bobby's Math Club has practice problems that adapt to your child’s level, each with a detailed explanation and an easy-to-follow video, so your child can build confidence in these skills one step at a time.
Words your child will hear
- doubles
- Facts where a number is added to itself, like 7 + 7 = 14.
- make a ten
- Filling up a ten first to add, like 8 + 5 = 8 + 2 + 3 = 13.
- fact family
- Related facts that use the same three numbers, like 6 + 9 = 15 and 15 − 9 = 6.
- equation
- A number sentence with an equal sign, like 9 + 4 = 13.
- bar graph
- A graph that uses bars of different lengths to show and compare amounts.
- picture graph
- A graph that uses small pictures to show how many are in each group.
- category
- One group on a graph, like apples or bananas.
- how many more
- A question that compares two amounts by finding the difference between them.
