i-Ready Classroom Mathematics Grade 4, Unit 5: Measurement and Data

In this unit, your child converts measurements from larger units to smaller ones, solves story problems about time, money, distance, and liquid volume, and uses area and perimeter formulas. They also make line plots of measurements in halves, fourths, and eighths. It follows the decimals unit and leads into geometry and angles.

Sample questions to try together

These are real questions from our practice. Tap the speaker to hear one read aloud, or the light bulb for a hint, and talk about the answer together.

Question 1 of 3

Amara buys a 5-pound bag of oranges. How many ounces does the bag weigh?

  • 60 ounces
  • 21 ounces
  • 80 ounces

How you can help

  1. Measure pencils or crayons to the nearest quarter inch and make a line plot together. Ask your child how much longer the longest is than the shortest.
  2. Measure a rug with a tape measure. Ask your child for the length of tape to go around it and the space it covers, in feet and square feet.
  3. Let your child work out change at the store. If an item costs $6.75 and you pay with $10, ask them to count up from $6.75 to find $3.25.

Where kids can get stuck

  • Lining up $6.75 and $5 as 675 and 5, and getting wildly wrong change.
  • Counting the Xs on a line plot when the question asks for a total length.
  • Writing an area as 24 feet instead of 24 square feet, mixing up the units.

Practice makes perfect

Bobby's Math Club has practice problems that adapt to your child’s level, each with a detailed explanation and an easy-to-follow video, so your child can build confidence in these skills one step at a time.

Words your child will hear

convert
To change a measurement into a different unit, like 3 feet into 36 inches.
conversion table
A two-column table of matching amounts in two units, like 1 foot and 12 inches.
elapsed time
How much time passes between the start and the end of an event.
liquid volume
How much liquid a container holds, measured in units like liters or cups.
area
The space inside a flat shape, measured in square units.
perimeter
The distance all the way around a flat shape.
line plot
A number line with an X above it for each measurement in a set of data.
data
Information that has been collected, like a set of measurements.
