i-Ready Classroom Mathematics Grade 4, Unit 4: Decimals and Fractions
In this unit, your child connects fractions with denominators of 10 and 100 to decimals. They rename tenths as hundredths, add tenths and hundredths, write fractions as decimals, and compare decimals to the hundredths place. It follows the fraction unit and leads into measurement and data, where decimals show up in money and lengths.

What is my child learning in Unit 4?
- Using hundredths grids to show that 5/10 = 50/100, and adding tenths and hundredths like 5/10 + 8/100. Learn more: Adding tenths and hundredths together
- Writing tenths and hundredths in decimal form, like 0.5 and 0.08, and placing them on a number line. Learn more: Writing fractions as decimals, like 0.62
- Comparing two decimals to the hundredths with >, =, or <, and explaining why 0.5 and 0.50 are equal. Learn more: Comparing decimals like 0.09 and 0.1

Question 1 of 3
How many hundredths make the same amount as 1/10?
- 1
- 10
- 100
How you can help
- Lay out 75 cents with 3 quarters, then with 7 dimes and 5 pennies. Ask your child to write the amount as 75/100 and as 0.75.
- Shade a 10-by-10 grid on paper: 5 full columns and 8 more squares. Ask your child to name it as a fraction and as a decimal, 58/100 and 0.58.
- Compare two prices under a dollar, like $0.60 and $0.58. Ask which is greater, and why 0.6 and 0.60 mean the same amount.
Where kids can get stuck
- Calling 0.50 larger than 0.5 because it has an extra digit.
- Deciding 0.7 is less than 0.65 because 7 is less than 65.
- Writing 8/100 as 0.8, putting the 8 in the tenths place.
Practice makes perfect
Bobby's Math Club has practice problems that adapt to your child’s level, each with a detailed explanation and an easy-to-follow video, so your child can build confidence in these skills one step at a time.
Words your child will hear

- hundredth
- One of 100 equal parts of a whole, written 1/100 or 0.01.
- hundredths grid
- A square split into 100 equal parts, used to show hundredths.
- tenths place
- The first place to the right of the decimal point.
- hundredths place
- The second place to the right of the decimal point.
