Into Math Kindergarten, Unit 8: Measurement and Data
In this unit, your child describes objects by what can be measured, such as length and weight; compares two objects to see which is longer, taller, or heavier; and sorts objects into groups to count and compare. It closes the year by bringing the counting and comparing skills from earlier units into everyday measuring.

What is my child learning in Unit 8?
- Describing one object in several ways, such as saying a book is long, flat, and heavy. Learn more: Describing how long or heavy things are
- Putting two objects side by side, with ends lined up, to tell which is longer or taller, and lifting both to tell which is heavier. Learn more: Comparing which is longer, taller, or heavier
- Sorting objects into groups by a rule, counting each group, and ordering the groups from most to fewest. Learn more: Sorting things into groups and counting them
Sample questions to try together
These are real questions from our practice. Tap the speaker to hear one read aloud, or the light bulb for a hint, and talk about the answer together.
Question 1 of 3
Is a feather heavy or light?
- Heavy
- Light
- Neither
How you can help
- Compare shoes from the closet: line up two by the heels and ask which is longer. Then hold one in each hand and guess which is heavier.
- Sort a pile of toys by a rule, like has wheels or has no wheels. Count each group and ask which group has more.
- Stand family members back to back on the same floor, heels together, and ask your child who is taller and who is shorter.
Where kids can get stuck
- Calling one child taller while they stand on tiptoe instead of flat on the floor.
- Sorting by their own rule, like color, after being asked to sort by wheels.
- Saying an object is just big, instead of naming whether it is long, tall, or heavy.
