Math Expressions Kindergarten, Unit 6: Consolidation of Concepts and Measurement

In this unit, your child brings together the year's counting and comparing to describe and measure objects. They name what can be measured, like length, height, and weight; compare two objects to see which is longer, taller, or heavier; and sort objects into groups to count. It wraps up kindergarten after the shape work of the last unit.

Sample questions to try together

These are real questions from our practice. Tap the speaker to hear one read aloud, or the light bulb for a hint, and talk about the answer together.

Question 1 of 3

Is a feather heavy or light?

  • Heavy
  • Light
  • Neither

How you can help

  1. Hold a pillow and a heavy book, and ask your child which is bigger and which is heavier. Talk about how the bigger one is not always the heavier one.
  2. Lay two scarves or belts on the floor with their ends lined up, and ask which is longer. Then switch to two shoes and ask again.
  3. Sort the toy bin into groups, like animals, cars, and balls. Count each group, and ask which has the most and which has the fewest.

Where kids can get stuck

  • Assuming the biggest object is always the heaviest, and being surprised when a pillow is lighter than a book.
  • Forgetting to line up the ends, so the object that sticks out farther looks longer.
  • Ordering groups by how much space they take, so a few big balls seem like more than many cars.

Practice makes perfect

Bobby's Math Club has practice problems that adapt to your child’s level, each with a detailed explanation and an easy-to-follow video, so your child can build confidence in these skills one step at a time.
