Reveal Math Grade 1, Unit 11: Measurement and Time
In this unit, your child compares lengths, measures objects with same-size units, and tells time to the hour and half hour. Each skill asks children to look carefully at where things start and end. This follows the data unit and leads into geometry, the final unit of the year.

What is my child learning in Unit 11?
- Putting three objects in order by length and comparing two objects by measuring each against a third, like a piece of string. Learn more: Ordering three things from shortest to longest
- Measuring length with same-size units laid end to end and naming the length, such as 6 paper clips long. Learn more: Measuring length by lining up same-size objects
- Telling and writing time to the hour and half hour, like 2:00 and 2:30, on clocks with hands and number clocks. Learn more: Telling time to the hour and half hour
Sample questions to try together

Question 1 of 3
Which object is usually the longest?
- A book
- A bus
- A shoe
How you can help
- Measure a table with your child's hand spans, then with yours. Talk about why your count is smaller when your hands are bigger.
- Line up three spoons, three pencils, or three toys and ask your child to order them from shortest to longest.
- Name the time at regular moments, like 3:00 or 3:30, and ask your child where the hour hand and minute hand point.
Where kids can get stuck
- Starting to measure partway along an object, so the count misses part of its length.
- Thinking an object got longer because measuring it with smaller units gave a bigger count.
- Writing 2:30 as 3:30, because the hour hand sits between the 2 and the 3.
Practice makes perfect
Bobby's Math Club has practice problems that adapt to your child’s level, each with a detailed explanation and an easy-to-follow video, so your child can build confidence in these skills one step at a time.
Words your child will hear
- length
- How long something is from one end to the other.
- longer
- Having more length than something else.
- shorter
- Having less length than something else.
- measure
- Find out how long or big something is by counting units.
- length unit
- A same-size object, like a paper clip, used again and again to measure.
- hour hand
- The short hand on a clock that points to the hour.
- minute hand
- The long hand on a clock that shows the minutes.
- o'clock
- Exactly on the hour, when the minute hand points straight up to 12.
- half past
- Thirty minutes after the hour, when the minute hand points to 6.
