Reveal Math Kindergarten, Unit 12: Measurement and Data
In this unit, your child finishes the year by measuring and sorting. They describe what can be measured about an object; compare two objects to see which is longer, taller, heavier, or holds more; and sort objects into groups, counting each one. It builds on the counting and shape work from earlier units.

What is my child learning in Unit 12?
- Telling what about an object can be measured, such as how long, how tall, or how heavy it is. Learn more: Describing how long or heavy things are
- Comparing two objects to find which is longer or taller by lining them up, which is heavier by lifting, and which holds more by pouring. Learn more: Comparing which is longer, taller, or heavier
- Sorting objects into groups, counting each group, and ordering the groups from the most to the fewest. Learn more: Sorting things into groups and counting them
Sample questions to try together
These are real questions from our practice. Tap the speaker to hear one read aloud, or the light bulb for a hint, and talk about the answer together.
Question 1 of 3
Is a feather heavy or light?
- Heavy
- Light
- Neither
How you can help
- Stand two cereal boxes side by side on the counter and ask which is taller. Then lift each one and ask which is heavier.
- Lay out a pile of mixed socks and sort them by color. Count each pile, then line up the piles from most to fewest.
- Ask your child to describe a favorite toy in as many ways as they can, like long, heavy, or tall, instead of just big.
Where kids can get stuck
- Comparing two objects without lining up their bottoms, so one only seems taller.
- Losing count of a pile of socks and counting some twice, so the groups end up in the wrong order.
- Using short and light as if they mean the same thing, so a small, heavy jar seems light.
Practice makes perfect
Bobby's Math Club has practice problems that adapt to your child’s level, each with a detailed explanation and an easy-to-follow video, so your child can build confidence in these skills one step at a time.
Words your child will hear
- length
- How long something is from one end to the other.
- height
- How tall something is from bottom to top.
- weight
- How heavy something is.
- taller
- Reaching higher from the bottom to the top.
- heavier
- Weighing more, so it is harder to lift.
- holds more
- Has room for a bigger amount inside, like more water.
- sort
- To put things into groups that are alike in some way.
- most
- The greatest number of things.
- fewest
- The smallest number of things.
