Reveal Math Kindergarten, Unit 7: Understand Addition

In this unit, your child learns what it means to add: putting groups together to find how many in all. They show adding with fingers, objects, sounds, and drawings; write equations like 2 + 3 = 5; and solve addition story problems within 10. It builds on counting to 100 and leads straight into subtraction in the next unit.

Sample questions to try together

These are real questions from our practice. Tap the speaker to hear one read aloud, or the light bulb for a hint, and talk about the answer together.

Question 1 of 3

Start at 7 and hop back 2. Where do you land?

A number line numbered from 0 to 10.
  • 2
  • 9
  • 5

How you can help

  1. Clap and stomp to add: clap 3 times, stomp 2 times, and ask how many sounds in all. Then let your child make one up for you.
  2. Tell a story at the table: 4 crackers are on your plate and I give you 2 more. Have your child show it with crackers and say how many in all.
  3. Draw an adding picture together, like 5 birds in a tree and 3 more landing, and write the equation 5 + 3 = 8 underneath.

Where kids can get stuck

  • Writing 2 + 3 = 5 correctly, but not showing the same story with objects or a drawing.
  • Losing track of a story partway and forgetting what the second number was for.
  • Counting one object twice when pushing two groups together, so the total comes out one too many.

Practice makes perfect

Bobby's Math Club has practice problems that adapt to your child’s level, each with a detailed explanation and an easy-to-follow video, so your child can build confidence in these skills one step at a time.
