Read and write numbers up to a million

Your child is surrounded by big numbers, from the miles on the car to the seats in a stadium, and reading them with confidence makes the world a little easier to understand. Reading and writing them correctly comes before rounding, adding, or multiplying them, which your child does this year. In 5th grade, the same idea stretches past the decimal point, to tenths, hundredths, and thousandths.

In this video, your child will learn to read and write numbers to a million.

The lesson stops at each question for your child's answer.

Three problems, each a little harder

Each problem is worked step by step. Your child will solve the last one before Bobby shows how.

Example 1

3,000 + 400 + 20 + 5 = ?

Example 2

60,000 + 2,000 + 8 = ?

Your child's turn

400,000 + 5,000 + 70 + 3 = ?

The three key steps

  1. 1Put each part in its place.
  2. 2Empty place? Write 0.
  3. 3Before the comma, say thousand

Mistakes to listen for

  • Writing "forty thousand six" as 4,006 or 400,006, unsure how many zeros fill the empty places.
  • Leaving out a place in expanded form, writing 30,405 as 30,000 + 4 + 5 instead of 30,000 + 400 + 5.
  • Reading 245,318 as "two hundred forty-five, three hundred eighteen," leaving out the word thousand.

Questions parents ask

Does my child need an account to watch?

No. You can watch this on any device at any time. If your child would like to practice reading and writing numbers up to a million, and you'd like parent-friendly reports on your child's progress and growth, you can join Bobby's Math Club for unlimited free practice.

What happens when my child answers a question?

A right answer gets a cheer, and the lesson carries on. If your child isn't sure, they can tap "I don't know yet", and Bobby gives the answer and shows another example. Nothing is scored or stored.

Is this the same lesson that's on YouTube?

Yes. Here, the lesson stops at each question and waits for your child to answer. On YouTube, each question stays on screen for a few seconds, and then the lesson plays on.
