Round to any place
Rounding is how your child will learn to catch their own mistakes: if 398 + 512 comes out as 1,810, a quick 400 + 500 = 900 shows something went wrong. Grown-ups round all the time, when guessing a grocery total or planning a drive. In 5th grade the same thinking is used to round decimals, such as money to the nearest dollar.
In this video, your child will learn to round big numbers to any place.

The lesson stops at each question for your child's answer.
Three problems, each a little harder
Each problem is worked step by step. Your child will solve the last one before Bobby shows how.

Example 1
Round 6,312 to the nearest thousand.

Example 2
Round 7,950 to the nearest hundred.

Your child's turn
Round 76,214 to the nearest ten thousand.
The three key steps
- 1Find the two it's between.
- 2Round to the closer one.
- 3Halfway? We agree to round up.
Mistakes to listen for
- Looking at the wrong digit, such as the 1 in the tens place, and rounding 6,812 to the nearest thousand as 6,000.
- Changing the digits after the rounding place wrongly, writing 6,812 to the nearest hundred as 6,810 instead of 6,800.
- Getting stuck when rounding makes a carry, writing 3,962 to the nearest hundred as 3,1000 instead of 4,000.

Questions parents ask
Does my child need an account to watch?
No. You can watch this on any device at any time. If your child would like to practice rounding big numbers to any place, and you'd like parent-friendly reports on your child's progress and growth, you can join Bobby's Math Club for unlimited free practice.
What happens when my child answers a question?
A right answer gets a cheer, and the lesson carries on. If your child isn't sure, they can tap "I don't know yet", and Bobby gives the answer and shows another example. Nothing is scored or stored.
Is this the same lesson that's on YouTube?
Yes. Here, the lesson stops at each question and waits for your child to answer. On YouTube, each question stays on screen for a few seconds, and then the lesson plays on.
