Divide with fractions
A solid start with dividing fractions gives your child real confidence, because this is often where children start to feel math stops making sense. Seeing why 5 ÷ 1/3 gives 15 servings prepares them for dividing any fraction by any fraction in 6th grade, where the usual shortcut is far easier to trust once they know what dividing by a fraction means.
In this video, your child will learn to divide with unit fractions and whole numbers.

The lesson stops at each question for your child's answer.
Three problems, each a little harder
Each problem is worked step by step. Your child will solve the last one before Bobby shows how.

Example 1
1/2 ÷ 3 = ?

Example 2
2 ÷ 1/3 = ?

Your child's turn
Mia has three cups of rice. Her scoop holds one fourth of a cup. How many scoops does she get?
The two key steps
- 1÷ whole number: share it
- 2÷ a unit fraction: how many fit
Mistakes to listen for
- Dividing the whole number by the denominator, so 1/2 ÷ 4 becomes 2 instead of 1/8.
- Multiplying instead of dividing, so 5 ÷ 1/3 becomes 5/3 instead of 15, because they expect division to shrink things.
- Confusing sharing with grouping, so "how many 1/4 cup scoops are in 3 cups" gets 3/4 instead of 12.

Questions parents ask
Does my child need an account to watch?
No. You can watch this on any device at any time. If your child would like to practice dividing with fractions, like 1/2 ÷ 4, and you'd like parent-friendly reports on your child's progress and growth, you can join Bobby's Math Club for unlimited free practice.
What happens when my child answers a question?
A right answer gets a cheer, and the lesson carries on. If your child isn't sure, they can tap "I don't know yet", and Bobby gives the answer and shows another example. Nothing is scored or stored.
Is this the same lesson that's on YouTube?
Yes. Here, the lesson stops at each question and waits for your child to answer. On YouTube, each question stays on screen for a few seconds, and then the lesson plays on.
