Multiply fractions
Multiplying fractions puts real tools in your child's hands: finding half of a recipe, three quarters of a price, or the area of a 1/2 foot by 3/4 foot tile. Understanding "a fraction of" an amount is also what makes dividing fractions in 6th grade, and percentages and probability after that, make sense. Without it, those topics can turn into rules applied without knowing why.
In this video, your child will learn to multiply fractions and whole numbers.

The lesson stops at each question for your child's answer.
Three problems, each a little harder
Each problem is worked step by step. Your child will solve the last one before Bobby shows how.

Example 1
1/2 × 3/4 = ?

Example 2
3/4 × 8 = ?

Your child's turn
3/4 × 2/3 = ?
The three key steps
- 1Times a fraction: a part of it
- 2Multiply the tops
- 3Multiply the bottoms
Mistakes to listen for
- Multiplying the whole number by the top and bottom, so 3 × 2/5 becomes 6/15, the same size as 2/5, instead of 6/5.
- Reading "1/2 of 3/4" as addition and answering 5/4, instead of a number smaller than 3/4, which is 3/8.
- Finding a common denominator before multiplying, as for adding, which makes the work longer and invites errors.

Is this the same lesson that's on YouTube?
Yes. Here, the lesson stops at each question and waits for your child to answer. On YouTube, each question stays on screen for a few seconds, and then the lesson plays on.
