Count forward from any number

Being able to start a count anywhere saves your child from going back to 1 every time they add. To find 8 + 3, they start at 8 and count three more, a strategy they use all through kindergarten and 1st grade. It also makes counting to 120 in 1st grade feel manageable, and later helps with subtracting by counting up, such as finding 12 - 9 by counting from 9 to 12.

In this video, your child will learn to count forward from any number.

The lesson stops at each question for your child's answer.

Three problems, each a little harder

Each problem is worked step by step. Your child will solve the last one before Bobby shows how.

Example 1

4, 5, 6, ?

Example 2

17, 18, 19, ?

Your child's turn

67, 68, 69, ?

The two key steps

  1. 1You can start at any number.
  2. 2Start there, then count on.

Mistakes to listen for

  • Going back to 1 to find the next number, even after counting "6, 7, 8" correctly.
  • Counting the starting number as a step, so 3 more than 5 becomes "5, 6, 7" and lands on 7.
  • Starting easily from small numbers like 4, but freezing when the starting number is in the teens, such as 13.

Questions parents ask

Does my child need an account to watch?

No. You can watch this on any device at any time. If your child would like to practice counting on from any number, and you'd like parent-friendly reports on your child's progress and growth, you can join Bobby's Math Club for unlimited free practice.

What happens when my child answers a question?

A right answer gets a cheer, and the lesson carries on. If your child isn't sure, they can tap "I don't know yet", and Bobby gives the answer and shows another example. Nothing is scored or stored.

Is this the same lesson that's on YouTube?

Yes. Here, the lesson stops at each question and waits for your child to answer. On YouTube, each question stays on screen for a few seconds, and then the lesson plays on.
