Write numbers 0 to 20

Writing numbers lets your child keep a record of what they count, so amounts can be compared, shared, and used later. Writing the teens correctly, with the 1 first in 14, also prepares them for 1st grade, where 14 means one ten and four ones. By the end of 1st grade your child will read and write numbers up to 120, and every written equation after that relies on this skill.

In this video, your child will learn to write the numbers from zero to twenty.

The lesson stops at each question for your child's answer.

Three problems, each a little harder

Each problem is worked step by step. Your child will solve the last one before Bobby shows how.

Example 1

How many dots? Pick the number.

Example 2

How many dots? Pick the number.

Your child's turn

How many dots? Pick the number.

The three key steps

  1. 1Count the dots.
  2. 2Write the number, starting at the top.
  3. 3A teen number starts with a one.

Mistakes to listen for

  • Writing fourteen as 41, putting the 4 first because it is the sound they hear first.
  • Reversing some numerals, such as 3 or 7, which is common in kindergarten and does not mean the amount is misunderstood.
  • Counting a group of 12 correctly but writing 2 or 10, not yet knowing how to write a two-digit number.

The lesson shows every step, so your child sees why it works. Read our parent's guide to writing numbers from 0 to 20 →

Questions parents ask

Does my child need an account to watch?

No. You can watch this on any device at any time. If your child would like to practice writing numbers from 0 to 20, and you'd like parent-friendly reports on your child's progress and growth, you can join Bobby's Math Club for unlimited free practice.

What happens when my child answers a question?

A right answer gets a cheer, and the lesson carries on. If your child isn't sure, they can tap "I don't know yet", and Bobby gives the answer and shows another example. Nothing is scored or stored.

Is this the same lesson that's on YouTube?

Yes. Here, the lesson stops at each question and waits for your child to answer. On YouTube, each question stays on screen for a few seconds, and then the lesson plays on.
