Compare two groups

Comparing groups is one of the first ways your child uses numbers to make sense of the world: which is more, and by how much? In kindergarten they compare groups up to 10 and then written numbers like 6 and 9, and by 1st grade they say how many more one group has, an early form of subtraction. It shows up every day too, from sharing snacks fairly to choosing the bigger pile.

In this video, your child will learn to find which group has more or fewer.

The lesson stops at each question for your child's answer.

Three problems, each a little harder

Each problem is worked step by step. Your child will solve the last one before Bobby shows how.

Example 1

Which row has more dots, or are they the same?

Example 2

Which row has more dots, or are they the same?

Your child's turn

Which row has fewer dots, or are they the same?

The three key steps

  1. 1Match each one with a partner.
  2. 2The row with extras has more, and the other row has fewer.
  3. 3If there are no extras, they are the same.

Mistakes to listen for

  • Judging by size, so 3 large blocks spread out seem like more than 5 small beads in a pile.
  • Mixing up "fewer" and "less," or pointing to the bigger group when asked which has fewer.
  • Picking one group as "more" when the two are equal, because they expect one group to win.

The lesson shows every step, so your child sees why it works. Read our parent's guide to comparing groups: which has more, which has fewer →

Questions parents ask

Does my child need an account to watch?

No. You can watch this on any device at any time. If your child would like to practice comparing groups: which has more, which has fewer, and you'd like parent-friendly reports on your child's progress and growth, you can join Bobby's Math Club for unlimited free practice.

What happens when my child answers a question?

A right answer gets a cheer, and the lesson carries on. If your child isn't sure, they can tap "I don't know yet", and Bobby gives the answer and shows another example. Nothing is scored or stored.

Is this the same lesson that's on YouTube?

Yes. Here, the lesson stops at each question and waits for your child to answer. On YouTube, each question stays on screen for a few seconds, and then the lesson plays on.

Where can I learn more?

There's a short, kid-friendly lesson like this one for every Pre-K to 5th grade math skill, all in our video library.
