The last number tells how many

This is the moment counting starts to mean something for your child: the last number said is the answer to "how many?" Without it, a child can recite a count and still not know what it tells them. The idea sits under comparing, adding, and taking away in kindergarten, and knowing a total stays the same when objects are rearranged later helps your child see that 3 + 2 and 2 + 3 both make 5.

In this video, your child will learn to find how many from the last number.

The lesson stops at each question for your child's answer.

Three problems, each a little harder

Each problem is worked step by step. Your child will solve the last one before Bobby shows how.

Example 1

How many dots?

Example 2

How many flowers?

Your child's turn

How many cars?

The three key steps

  1. 1Count each one just once.
  2. 2The last number tells how many.
  3. 3Moving them, or starting somewhere else, doesn't change how many.

Mistakes to listen for

  • Counting the group again from one when you ask how many, instead of giving the last number.
  • Thinking a spread-out row of five buttons has more than a tight row of five, because it looks longer.
  • Expecting a different total when the count starts from a different object, and being surprised when it matches.
