Write numbers 0 to 5

Writing a numeral gives your child a way to record an amount, and every written sum in the years ahead rests on it. In kindergarten this grows to writing numbers up to 20, and by 1st grade to equations like 3 + 2 = 5. Understanding 0 as a real amount matters later too, in numbers like 10, 20, and 105, where the zero holds a place.

In this video, your child will learn to write the numbers from zero to five.

The lesson stops at each question for your child's answer.

Three problems, each a little harder

Each problem is worked step by step. Your child will solve the last one before Bobby shows how.

Example 1

How many dots? Pick the number.

Example 2

How many dots? Pick the number.

Your child's turn

How many dots? Pick the number.

The three key steps

  1. 1Count the dots.
  2. 2Write the number, starting at the top.
  3. 3No dots means zero.

Mistakes to listen for

  • Writing some numerals backwards, especially 2 and 5, which is common at this age and not a sign of confusion about amounts.
  • Leaving the space blank when there are no objects, because they do not yet see 0 as a number.
  • Writing the wrong numeral for the group, such as 4 for three blocks, because symbol and count are not linked yet.

Questions parents ask

Does my child need an account to watch?

No. You can watch this on any device at any time. If your child would like to practice writing a number 0 to 5 to show how many, and you'd like parent-friendly reports on your child's progress and growth, you can join Bobby's Math Club for unlimited free practice.

What happens when my child answers a question?

A right answer gets a cheer, and the lesson carries on. If your child isn't sure, they can tap "I don't know yet", and Bobby gives the answer and shows another example. Nothing is scored or stored.

Is this the same lesson that's on YouTube?

Yes. Here, the lesson stops at each question and waits for your child to answer. On YouTube, each question stays on screen for a few seconds, and then the lesson plays on.
