enVision Mathematics Grade 3, Topic 5: Fluently Multiply and Divide Within 100

In this unit, your child pulls together every multiplication and division fact up to 10 × 10 and works on recalling them quickly. They look for patterns in the multiplication table and use facts to solve two-step story problems, checking whether answers make sense. Next, these facts get a picture: area, where rows of squares show multiplication.

Sample questions to try together

These are real questions from our practice. Tap the speaker to hear one read aloud, or the light bulb for a hint, and talk about the answer together.

Question 1 of 3

What is 16 ÷ 2?

  • 8
  • 7
  • 14

How you can help

  1. Play a quick fact game on a walk or ride, taking turns asking one multiplication or division fact at a time and mixing easy ones with hard ones.
  2. Before your child solves a story problem at dinner, ask whether the answer will be closer to 10 or 50, then compare the guess with the real answer.
  3. Ask your child to predict whether a product will be even or odd before working it out, such as 7 × 8, then check together.

Where kids can get stuck

  • Knowing a table when chanting it in order, but not when one fact like 6 × 9 is asked alone.
  • Doing the right operations in the wrong order, which tells a different story than the problem.
  • Giving an answer that makes no sense, like more markers left than were bought, without checking.

Practice makes perfect

Bobby's Math Club has practice problems that adapt to your child’s level, each with a detailed explanation and an easy-to-follow video, so your child can build confidence in these skills one step at a time.
