enVision Mathematics Grade 3, Topic 7: Represent and Interpret Data
In this unit, your child collects data and shows it on picture graphs, bar graphs, and line plots. Each picture or square can stand for more than one, so reading the key or scale matters. They answer questions like how many more and how many fewer, and measure lengths to the nearest quarter inch. Addition and subtraction strategies come next.

What is my child learning in Topic 7?
- Reading a graph's scale, the numbers that show what each step is worth, and answering how many more or fewer. Learn more: Reading picture graphs and bar graphs
- Measuring pencils, crayons, and other objects to the nearest half or quarter inch, then marking each length on a line plot. Learn more: Measuring to the nearest quarter inch
Sample questions to try together

Question 1 of 3
Look at the bar graph. How many more students chose Green as their favorite color than Blue?
- 10
- 4
- 6
How you can help
- Track something your family does for a week, such as books read, and draw a picture graph where each smiley face stands for 2.
- Point out bar graphs on cereal boxes or in the newspaper and ask your child what each line on the side counts by.
- Ask your child to measure pasta pieces, crayons, or toy cars to the nearest quarter inch and sort them from shortest to longest.
Where kids can get stuck
- Guessing at a bar that ends between lines, reading halfway between 10 and 20 as 11 instead of 15.
- Adding when the question asks how many more, so 30 books and 20 books gives 50 instead of 10.
- Spacing a line plot unevenly or leaving out lengths with no X marks, which makes it misleading.
Practice makes perfect
Bobby's Math Club has practice problems that adapt to your child’s level, each with a detailed explanation and an easy-to-follow video, so your child can build confidence in these skills one step at a time.
Words your child will hear
- data
- Facts or numbers gathered to answer a question.
- picture graph
- A graph where small pictures stand for a set number of things.
- bar graph
- A graph where the length of each bar shows how many.
- key
- A note on a graph saying what each picture is worth.
- scale
- The numbers along a graph's side, often counting by 2s, 5s, or 10s.
- category
- One group the data is sorted into, like 'dogs' or 'cats'.
- line plot
- A graph that shows data with X marks above a number line.
- quarter inch
- A fourth of an inch, the length between the smallest marks on many rulers.
