enVision Mathematics Kindergarten, Topic 2: Compare Numbers 0 to 5
In this unit, your child uses counting to 5 to compare. Kindergartners ask whether one group is greater than, less than, or equal to another, line up two groups to match one to one, see which has extras, and compare written numbers like 2 and 4. This comparing habit gets used again soon, once the next unit brings in the numbers 6 to 10.

What is my child learning in Topic 2?

- Comparing two written numbers up to 5, such as 2 and 4, and saying which is greater and which is less. Learn more: Comparing numbers from 1 to 10
Sample questions to try together
These are real questions from our practice. Tap the speaker to hear one read aloud, or the light bulb for a hint, and talk about the answer together.
Question 1 of 3
You and your friend each have 7 stickers. Who has more?
- You
- You both have the same
- Your friend
How you can help
- Set out cups and spoons, such as 4 cups and 3 spoons, and let your child put one spoon in each cup to see which group has more.
- Each hold up some fingers, from 0 to 5, and let your child say whose number is greater, whose is less, or whether they are the same.
- Write two numbers up to 5 on sticky notes and ask your child which is greater, then build both numbers with toys to check.
Where kids can get stuck
- Judging by how much space a group takes up, so 3 big toys seem like more than 5 small ones.
- Pointing to the greater number when asked which is less, because 'greater' is the question they expect.
- Counting both groups correctly, getting 3 and 5, then naming the wrong group as having more.
Practice makes perfect
Bobby's Math Club has practice problems that adapt to your child’s level, each with a detailed explanation and an easy-to-follow video, so your child can build confidence in these skills one step at a time.
