enVision Mathematics Kindergarten, Topic 4: Compare Numbers 0 to 10

In this unit, your child compares any two amounts from 0 to 10. Kindergartners decide which group has more or fewer by matching or counting, and compare written numbers such as 6 and 9 by knowing which comes later in the count. It brings together the earlier comparing work and the new numbers to 10, and it leads into sorting things into groups and counting them.

Question 1 of 3

You and your friend each have 7 stickers. Who has more?

  • You
  • You both have the same
  • Your friend

How you can help

  1. Count the forks and spoons in the drawer together, up to 10 of each, and ask your child which there are more of and how they know.
  2. Write two numbers between 1 and 10 on paper and ask your child which is greater, then count up from 1 together to see which comes later.
  3. Line up two rows of shoes on the floor, one under the other, and let your child match them pair by pair to see which row has extras.

Where kids can get stuck

  • Hesitating over numbers close together, such as 7 and 8, even when far-apart pairs like 2 and 9 come easily.
  • Saying 6 is greater than 9 because the 6 is written larger on the page.
  • Judging a spread-out row of 6 as more than a squeezed-together row of 9.

Practice makes perfect

Bobby's Math Club has practice problems that adapt to your child’s level, each with a detailed explanation and an easy-to-follow video, so your child can build confidence in these skills one step at a time.
