Eureka Math² Kindergarten, Module 1: Math Is... / Numbers to 10
In this unit, your child begins to see themselves as someone who does math. Kindergartners notice, sort, and count everyday things, talk about how they know a count is right, write numerals, and find that the last number counted tells how many. These habits of explaining and checking carry through the year, starting with flat and solid shapes in the next unit.

What is my child learning in Module 1?
- Writing numerals, the written numbers, from 0 to 10 to record a count, and checking that the number matches the group. Learn more: Writing numbers from 0 to 20
- Explaining how they know a count is right: one number for each thing, and the last number tells how many. Learn more: How counting tells you how many
- Counting groups of up to 10 that are lined up, in a circle, or scattered, and counting out a number someone asks for. Learn more: Counting groups of up to 20 things
- Sorting everyday things into groups, such as by color or kind, then counting and comparing the groups. Learn more: Sorting things into groups and counting them
Sample questions to try together
These are real questions from our practice. Tap the speaker to hear one read aloud, or the light bulb for a hint, and talk about the answer together.
Question 1 of 3
How many apples do you see?
- 9
- 7
- 8
How you can help
- Ask 'How do you know?' after your child counts something, such as the chairs at the table, and let them show you how they counted.
- Sort a basket of toys into groups your child chooses, count each group together, and write the numbers on sticky notes.
- Count out stuffed animals for a pretend picnic, such as 9, and let your child check the count a second way, like moving each one as they count.
Where kids can get stuck
- Starting over from 1 when asked how many, right after counting 9 chairs correctly.
- Skipping scattered objects or counting them twice, without moving each one aside as it is counted.
- Sorting toys by size when they were asked to sort by color, then counting the wrong groups.
