Eureka Math Grade 3, Module 2: Place Value and Problem Solving with Units of Measure

In this unit, your child uses place value, the value of a digit based on its spot in a number, to round, add, and subtract within 1,000. The numbers come from measuring: minutes on a clock, grams and kilograms on a scale, and liters in a container. Multiplication returns in the next unit, with the facts for 6, 7, 8, and 9.

Question 1 of 3

What is 43 rounded to the nearest 10?

  • 50
  • 40
  • 30

How you can help

  1. Read the clock when your child starts and finishes a job, such as tidying a room from 4:35 to 4:52, and ask how long it took (17 minutes).
  2. Read package labels in the kitchen, such as a 400-gram box of pasta, and ask how many grams 2 boxes hold (800 grams).
  3. Round the weight or price on a grocery label to the nearest ten, such as 38 to 40, and ask your child why it is not 30.

Where kids can get stuck

  • Misreading the hour hand when it is close to the next number, so 2:55 reads as 3:55.
  • Reading a scale or measuring cup at the wrong line, skipping over what each mark stands for.
  • Rounding 349 to 400 in two steps, 349 to 350 and then to 400, instead of asking which hundred is closer.

Practice makes perfect

Bobby's Math Club has practice problems that adapt to your child’s level, each with a detailed explanation and an easy-to-follow video, so your child can build confidence in these skills one step at a time.
