Into Math Grade 1, Unit 6: Measurement and Data
In this unit, your child compares and measures length, tells time to the hour and half hour, and collects and reads simple data. These skills take the number work from the two-digit adding and subtracting unit into everyday life. Next comes geometry, where children study shapes and split them into equal parts.

What is my child learning in Unit 6?
- Ordering three objects by length and comparing two objects that cannot sit side by side by using a string or third object. Learn more: Ordering three things from shortest to longest
- Measuring an object's length with same-size units, like paper clips, laid end to end without gaps or overlaps. Learn more: Measuring length by lining up same-size objects
- Reading and writing times like 3:00 and 3:30 on clocks with hands and on clocks with numbers only. Learn more: Telling time to the hour and half hour
- Asking a question, sorting the answers into up to three groups, and comparing groups to find how many more or fewer. Learn more: Sorting, tallying, and reading simple charts

Question 1 of 3
Which object is usually the longest?
- A book
- A bus
- A shoe
How you can help
- Cut a piece of string as long as your child's arm, then use it to find things around the house that are longer and shorter.
- Ask family members to vote on a snack, apples, crackers, or yogurt, and help your child tally the votes and find which got the most.
- Set a clock with hands to bedtime, like 8:30, and ask your child to show and say the time, then write it the digital way.
Where kids can get stuck
- Comparing only where the objects end, not lining up their starting points first.
- Overlapping the paper clips when measuring, so the count comes out too big.
- Reading 3:30 as 4:30, because the hour hand has already moved past the 3.
Practice makes perfect
Bobby's Math Club has practice problems that adapt to your child’s level, each with a detailed explanation and an easy-to-follow video, so your child can build confidence in these skills one step at a time.
Words your child will hear
- length
- How long something is from one end to the other.
- length unit
- A same-size object, like a paper clip, used again and again to measure.
- gap
- An empty space left between objects when measuring.
- overlap
- When objects lie on top of each other instead of end to end.
- hour hand
- The short hand on a clock that points to the hour.
- minute hand
- The long hand on a clock that shows the minutes.
- half past
- Thirty minutes after the hour, when the minute hand points to 6.
- data
- Facts or numbers that are collected, like everyone's favorite fruit.
- tally mark
- A line drawn to count one thing; every fifth line crosses the other four.
