Reveal Math Grade 2, Unit 10: Data
In this unit, your child collects data and shows it on graphs. They make picture graphs and bar graphs with up to four categories, measure objects and show the lengths on a line plot, and answer questions like 'how many more' and 'how many in all.' It builds on money and time and leads into measuring with inches, feet, centimeters, and meters.

What is my child learning in Unit 10?
- Measuring objects to the nearest whole inch or centimeter and marking each length with an X on a line plot. Learn more: Measuring things and making a line plot
- Drawing picture graphs and bar graphs with up to four categories, and using them to solve put-together and compare problems. Learn more: Making and reading picture graphs and bar graphs
Sample questions to try together
These are real questions from our practice. Tap the speaker to hear one read aloud, or the light bulb for a hint, and talk about the answer together.
Question 1 of 3
Sarah measured the length of her crayons. She found lengths of 5 inches, 6 inches, 5 inches, 7 inches, and 6 inches. How many crayons were 5 inches long?

How you can help
- Ask family members a question with three or four choices, like their favorite breakfast. Help your child make a bar graph, then ask how many more chose the top answer.
- Measure everyone's hand or shoe in inches and make a line plot together, with one X per person above each length.
- Read a graph on a cereal box or a school flyer with your child. Ask one 'how many in all' question and one 'how many more' question.
Where kids can get stuck
- Drawing bars of different widths, or starting some above the line, so some groups look bigger than they are.
- Leaving a number out of a line plot because no one measured that length.
- Answering a 'how many more' question by adding the two bars together.
Practice makes perfect
Bobby's Math Club has practice problems that adapt to your child’s level, each with a detailed explanation and an easy-to-follow video, so your child can build confidence in these skills one step at a time.
Words your child will hear
- data
- Information you collect, like measurements or votes.
- picture graph
- A graph that uses small pictures to show how many are in each group.
- bar graph
- A graph that uses bars of different lengths to show and compare amounts.
- category
- One group on a graph, such as apples on a graph of favorite fruits.
- line plot
- A number line with an X for each measurement, to show data.
- scale
