Fluently add within 20

Knowing addition facts by heart gives your child room to think about the interesting part of a problem. Sums like 8 + 7 sit inside bigger problems, such as 48 + 37 this year, and inside multiplying in 3rd grade. If the fact comes to mind without counting, your child's attention is free for the harder step. It shows up at home too: adding two dice, totaling a few scores, or counting snacks for friends.

In this video, your child will learn to add within twenty quickly, in your head.

The lesson stops at each question for your child's answer.

Three problems, each a little harder

Each problem is worked step by step. Your child will solve the last one before Bobby shows how.

Example 1

9 + 3 = ?

Example 2

8 + 7 = ?

Your child's turn

7 + 6 = ?

The three key steps

  1. 1Make a ten first.
  2. 2Split to fill the 10.
  3. 3Then add the rest to 10.

Mistakes to listen for

  • Counting on fingers or by ones for facts like 8 + 6, which slows every larger problem and invites slips.
  • Confusing near neighbors, such as answering 7 + 8 = 16 because the double 8 + 8 = 16 feels close.
  • Treating 4 + 9 and 9 + 4 as two separate facts to learn, not seeing that swapping them keeps the sum at 13.

Questions parents ask

Does my child need an account to watch?

No. You can watch this on any device at any time. If your child would like to practice adding fluently within 20, and you'd like parent-friendly reports on your child's progress and growth, you can join Bobby's Math Club for unlimited free practice.

What happens when my child answers a question?

A right answer gets a cheer, and the lesson carries on. If your child isn't sure, they can tap "I don't know yet", and Bobby gives the answer and shows another example. Nothing is scored or stored.

Is this the same lesson that's on YouTube?

Yes. Here, the lesson stops at each question and waits for your child to answer. On YouTube, each question stays on screen for a few seconds, and then the lesson plays on.
