Add to find how many in an array
Rows of equal groups are the picture your child will carry into multiplication. In 3rd grade they will write 3 rows of 4 as 3 × 4 = 12, use the same picture to see why 4 × 3 gives the same total, and later use it to find the area of a rectangle. A child who understands what repeated addition counts will find multiplication facts make sense instead of feeling like a list to memorize.
In this video, your child will learn to find how many in an array.

The lesson stops at each question for your child's answer.
Three problems, each a little harder
Each problem is worked step by step. Your child will solve the last one before Bobby shows how.

Example 1
How many dots are in this array?

Example 2
4 + 4 + 4 = ?

Your child's turn
How many dots are in this array?
The three key steps
- 1How many in one row?
- 2Add it once for every row.
- 3The sum is how many in all.
Mistakes to listen for
- Counting every object one at a time instead of adding rows, then skipping or recounting some in the middle.
- Adding the number of rows to the number of columns, answering 7 for 3 rows of 4.
- Writing the wrong number of addends, such as 4 + 4 for 3 rows of 4, after losing track of the rows.

Questions parents ask
Does my child need an account to watch?
No. You can watch this on any device at any time. If your child would like to practice counting objects in equal rows by adding, and you'd like parent-friendly reports on your child's progress and growth, you can join Bobby's Math Club for unlimited free practice.
What happens when my child answers a question?
A right answer gets a cheer, and the lesson carries on. If your child isn't sure, they can tap "I don't know yet", and Bobby gives the answer and shows another example. Nothing is scored or stored.
Is this the same lesson that's on YouTube?
Yes. Here, the lesson stops at each question and waits for your child to answer. On YouTube, each question stays on screen for a few seconds, and then the lesson plays on.
