Solve story problems within 100

Story problems are where your child learns to think through a situation before reaching for the numbers. Real life rarely ends after one calculation, and deciding which step comes first is a habit they will lean on for years. In 3rd grade, two-step problems bring in multiplication and division, such as buying 3 packs of 6 juice boxes and giving 5 away. A child who stops to picture the story chooses the right operation instead of guessing.

In this video, your child will learn to solve story problems with a bar.

The lesson stops at each question for your child's answer.

Three problems, each a little harder

Each problem is worked step by step. Your child will solve the last one before Bobby shows how.

Example 1

Mia has 57 stickers. Leo has 23. How many more stickers does Mia have?

Example 2

A bus has 32 kids. 15 more get on. Then 23 get off. How many kids are on now?

Your child's turn

Sam had some cards. He got 25 more. Now he has 68. How many did he have at first?

The three key steps

  1. 1Draw a bar for each step.
  2. 2Whole missing? Add the parts.
  3. 3Part missing? Subtract.

Mistakes to listen for

  • Stopping after the first step of a two-step problem and giving the in-between total as the answer.
  • Adding whenever a story says "more," even in "Ava has 52 stamps, 17 more than Leo," where Leo has 35.
  • Losing track of what each number stands for, then using the wrong amount in the second step.

The lesson shows every step, so your child sees why it works. Read our parent's guide to one- and two-step story problems within 100 →

Questions parents ask

Does my child need an account to watch?

No. You can watch this on any device at any time. If your child would like to practice one- and two-step story problems within 100, and you'd like parent-friendly reports on your child's progress and growth, you can join Bobby's Math Club for unlimited free practice.

What happens when my child answers a question?

A right answer gets a cheer, and the lesson carries on. If your child isn't sure, they can tap "I don't know yet", and Bobby gives the answer and shows another example. Nothing is scored or stored.

Is this the same lesson that's on YouTube?

Yes. Here, the lesson stops at each question and waits for your child to answer. On YouTube, each question stays on screen for a few seconds, and then the lesson plays on.
