Understand what a fraction means
Your child's journey with fractions begins here, and almost every fraction skill after it rests on seeing 3/4 as three pieces of size 1/4. That picture makes adding fractions in 4th grade feel like counting, since 1/4 + 2/4 is three fourths. It later supports decimals and measurement, and it shows up at home in recipes, pizza slices, and the half and quarter marks on a measuring cup.
In this video, your child will learn to understand what a fraction means.

The lesson stops at each question for your child's answer.
Three problems, each a little harder
Each problem is worked step by step. Your child will solve the last one before Bobby shows how.

Example 1
What fraction of the bar is shaded?

Example 2
What fraction of the bar is shaded?

Your child's turn
What fraction of the bar is shaded?
The two key steps
- 1Bottom: how many equal parts
- 2Top: count the parts
Mistakes to listen for
- Calling any piece a fraction even when the pieces differ in size, such as saying 4 uneven pizza slices show fourths.
- Thinking 1/8 is bigger than 1/4 because 8 is bigger than 4.
- Counting shaded and unshaded parts instead of shaded and total parts, so 3 of 4 parts shaded becomes 3/1.

What happens when my child answers a question?
A right answer gets a cheer, and the lesson carries on. If your child isn't sure, they can tap "I don't know yet", and Bobby gives the answer and shows another example. Nothing is scored or stored.
Is this the same lesson that's on YouTube?
Yes. Here, the lesson stops at each question and waits for your child to answer. On YouTube, each question stays on screen for a few seconds, and then the lesson plays on.
