Compare fractions with different denominators
A feel for which fraction is larger is what lets your child notice when an answer is unreasonable. It matters in everyday choices too, like whether 2/3 of a cup or 3/4 of a cup is more. Next year it supports adding fractions with different denominators, and it is closely tied to comparing decimals and, later, percents.
In this video, your child will learn to compare fractions with different bottom numbers.

The lesson stops at each question for your child's answer.
Three problems, each a little harder
Each problem is worked step by step. Your child will solve the last one before Bobby shows how.

Example 1
1/2 ? 3/8

Example 2
5/4 ? 7/6

Your child's turn
7/5 ? 3/2
The two key steps
- 1Make the bottoms the same
- 2Then compare the tops
Mistakes to listen for
- Thinking bigger numbers mean a bigger fraction, so 3/10 seems greater than 2/3.
- Thinking 1/8 is bigger than 1/4 because 8 is bigger than 4.
- Changing only the bottom number to get a common denominator, rewriting 2/3 as 2/6 to compare with 5/6.

What happens when my child answers a question?
A right answer gets a cheer, and the lesson carries on. If your child isn't sure, they can tap "I don't know yet", and Bobby gives the answer and shows another example. Nothing is scored or stored.
Is this the same lesson that's on YouTube?
Yes. Here, the lesson stops at each question and waits for your child to answer. On YouTube, each question stays on screen for a few seconds, and then the lesson plays on.
