Find equivalent fractions by multiplying or dividing
Equal fractions open the door to most of the fraction work ahead for your child, starting this year with comparing fractions and renaming tenths as hundredths. In 5th grade, adding 1/2 + 1/3 means rewriting both as sixths, and simplifying an answer like 6/8 to 3/4 relies on the same idea. Later, ratios and percents work the same way: 3/4 is 75/100, or 75%.
In this video, your child will learn to find equal fractions by multiplying or dividing.

The lesson stops at each question for your child's answer.
Three problems, each a little harder
Each problem is worked step by step. Your child will solve the last one before Bobby shows how.

Example 1
What is the missing number? 1/3 = ?/6

Example 2
What is the missing number? 6/10 = 3/?

Your child's turn
What is the missing number? 9/12 = 3/?
The three key steps
- 1Split each part the same way
- 2Multiply both by that number
- 3Joining parts? Divide both
Mistakes to listen for
- Multiplying only the bottom number and saying 3/4 equals 3/8, which is a smaller amount.
- Adding the same number to the top and bottom, so 2/3 seems equal to 4/5.
- Using the multiplying rule without being able to draw or explain why 2/5 and 4/10 are the same amount.
