Divide with remainders

Sharing things out fairly is something your child already cares about, and division with remainders is the math behind it: 87 stickers among 5 friends, or how many boxes 150 cupcakes will fill. It sets up dividing by two-digit numbers in 5th grade, and later dividing decimals and fractions. Checking by multiplying back, 17 × 5 + 2 = 87, is a habit that will serve them for years.

In this video, your child will learn to divide by a one-digit number, with remainders.

The lesson stops at each question for your child's answer.

Three problems, each a little harder

Each problem is worked step by step. Your child will solve the last one before Bobby shows how.

Example 1

69 ÷ 3 = ?

Example 2

87 ÷ 5 = ? R 2

Your child's turn

1,370 ÷ 6 = ? R 2

The three key steps

  1. 1Hundreds, then tens, then ones.
  2. 2Add the parts on top.
  3. 3What's left is the remainder.

Mistakes to listen for

  • Leaving a remainder bigger than the divisor, such as 87 ÷ 5 = 16 remainder 7, when 7 holds another 5.
  • Dropping a zero in the answer, so 624 ÷ 6 becomes 14 instead of 104.
  • Skipping the check by multiplying back, so 1,452 ÷ 6 = 232 goes unnoticed though 232 × 6 is only 1,392.

Questions parents ask

Does my child need an account to watch?

No. You can watch this on any device at any time. If your child would like to practice dividing with remainders, like 87 ÷ 5, and you'd like parent-friendly reports on your child's progress and growth, you can join Bobby's Math Club for unlimited free practice.

What happens when my child answers a question?

A right answer gets a cheer, and the lesson carries on. If your child isn't sure, they can tap "I don't know yet", and Bobby gives the answer and shows another example. Nothing is scored or stored.

Is this the same lesson that's on YouTube?

Yes. Here, the lesson stops at each question and waits for your child to answer. On YouTube, each question stays on screen for a few seconds, and then the lesson plays on.
