Multiply two two-digit numbers

This is where your child’s times tables go to work on bigger pairs, like 38 rows of 64 seats or a room 12 feet by 14. Next year it supports dividing by two-digit numbers, and in algebra the same splitting into parts is used to multiply expressions with letters in them. At home, it is how you would price 12 pizzas at $15 each.

In this video, your child will learn to multiply two two-digit numbers.

The lesson stops at each question for your child's answer.

Three problems, each a little harder

Each problem is worked step by step. Your child will solve the last one before Bobby shows how.

Example 1

21 × 13 = ?

Example 2

64 × 38 = ?

Your child's turn

47 × 56 = ?

The three key steps

  1. 1Split both numbers by place.
  2. 2Multiply part by part.
  3. 3Add all the boxes.

Mistakes to listen for

  • Multiplying only the matching places, so 64 × 38 becomes 1,800 + 32 = 1,832, missing 60 × 8 and 4 × 30.
  • Treating tens as ones inside a part, writing 60 × 30 as 180 instead of 1,800.
  • Getting each part right but adding them wrongly, such as lining up 1,800, 480, 120, and 32 by their left edges.

Questions parents ask

Does my child need an account to watch?

No. You can watch this on any device at any time. If your child would like to practice multiplying two two-digit numbers, and you'd like parent-friendly reports on your child's progress and growth, you can join Bobby's Math Club for unlimited free practice.

What happens when my child answers a question?

A right answer gets a cheer, and the lesson carries on. If your child isn't sure, they can tap "I don't know yet", and Bobby gives the answer and shows another example. Nothing is scored or stored.

Is this the same lesson that's on YouTube?

Yes. Here, the lesson stops at each question and waits for your child to answer. On YouTube, each question stays on screen for a few seconds, and then the lesson plays on.

Where can I learn more?
