Divide by a two-digit number

Dividing by two-digit numbers is the bridge your child will cross to reach long division in 6th grade. Asking how many 12s fit into 384 makes that written method much easier to follow. It also comes up whenever things are shared or grouped, like splitting a $480 bill among 16 people, and later supports unit rates and dividing decimals.

In this video, your child will learn to divide by a two-digit number.

The lesson stops at each question for your child's answer.

Three problems, each a little harder

Each problem is worked step by step. Your child will solve the last one before Bobby shows how.

Example 1

252 ÷ 12 = ?

Example 2

1,530 ÷ 24 = ? R 18

Your child's turn

1,500 ÷ 36 = ? R 24

The three key steps

  1. 1Big parts first, then smaller.
  2. 2Add the parts on top.
  3. 3What's left is the remainder.

Mistakes to listen for

  • Picking a first chunk that is too big, like 12 × 40 = 480 for 384 ÷ 12, then getting stuck.
  • Losing track of the partial answers, so for 384 ÷ 12 they find 30 and 2 but write 302.
  • Mishandling the remainder, writing 500 ÷ 16 as 314 instead of 31 with 4 left over.

Questions parents ask

Does my child need an account to watch?

No. You can watch this on any device at any time. If your child would like to practice dividing by two-digit numbers, like 480 ÷ 16, and you'd like parent-friendly reports on your child's progress and growth, you can join Bobby's Math Club for unlimited free practice.

What happens when my child answers a question?

A right answer gets a cheer, and the lesson carries on. If your child isn't sure, they can tap "I don't know yet", and Bobby gives the answer and shows another example. Nothing is scored or stored.

Is this the same lesson that's on YouTube?

Yes. Here, the lesson stops at each question and waits for your child to answer. On YouTube, each question stays on screen for a few seconds, and then the lesson plays on.
