Round decimals
Rounding gives your child the power to estimate, and estimating is how they will catch their own mistakes. It means knowing $3.459 a gallon is about $3.46, or that 4.68 + 2.1 should be close to 7. Your child will lean on that habit to check decimal answers this year and in middle school, where measurement, money, and percentages all come with digits past the decimal point.
In this video, your child will learn to round decimals to any place.

The lesson stops at each question for your child's answer.
Three problems, each a little harder
Each problem is worked step by step. Your child will solve the last one before Bobby shows how.

Example 1
Round 12.342 to the nearest hundredth.

Example 2
Round 18.5 to the nearest whole number.

Your child's turn
Round 5.345 to the nearest tenth.
The three key steps
- 1Find the two it's between.
- 2Round to the closer one.
- 3Exactly halfway? Round up.
Mistakes to listen for
- Rounding to the wrong place, giving 5 or 4.68 for 4.68 to the nearest tenth instead of 4.7.
- Stumbling when rounding carries over, writing 2.10 or 2.9 for 2.97 to the nearest tenth instead of 3.0.
- Looking at every digit to the right, so the final 9 in 3.149 makes them round up to 3.2 instead of 3.1.
