Multiply multi-digit numbers

Confidence with big multiplication frees your child to focus on the harder thinking ahead. Dividing by two-digit numbers, multiplying decimals, and finding volume all lean on it this year, and in middle school it sits underneath ratios, percentages, and area problems. A child who still has to fight through 24 × 36 often loses the thread of the bigger problem it was part of.

In this video, your child will learn to multiply multi-digit numbers.

The lesson stops at each question for your child's answer.

Three problems, each a little harder

Each problem is worked step by step. Your child will solve the last one before Bobby shows how.

Example 1

32 × 21 = ?

Example 2

46 × 37 = ?

Your child's turn

125 × 34 = ?

The three key steps

  1. 1Multiply by the ones first.
  2. 2Zero first, then the tens digit.
  3. 3Add the two rows.

Mistakes to listen for

  • Forgetting the placeholder zero, so 213 × 32 becomes 426 + 639 = 1,065 instead of 6,816.
  • Mixing up the small carried digits, adding one from multiplying by 2 into the row for multiplying by 30.
  • Misaligning the columns of partial products, so tens sit under hundreds and the total is far off.
