Eureka Math Grade 3, Module 6: Collecting and Displaying Data

In this unit, your child collects data and shows it on picture graphs, bar graphs, and line plots. They choose a scale, such as each square standing for 5, and answer how many more and how many fewer. They also measure lengths to the nearest quarter inch and plot them, using the fraction work from the last unit. Geometry and measurement problems come next.

Question 1 of 3

Look at the bar graph. How many more students chose Green as their favorite color than Blue?

A bar graph with three bars, each with its number printed above it. Red: 8. Blue: 4. Green: 10.
  • 10
  • 4
  • 6

How you can help

  1. Count the socks in the laundry by color and draw a bar graph where each square stands for 2 socks, so 10 white socks fill 5 squares.
  2. Measure 5 crayons to the nearest quarter inch, write each length, and draw a line plot marked in quarter inches to show them.
  3. Ask your child what each line on the side counts by when you spot a bar graph on a cereal box or in a store flyer.

Where kids can get stuck

  • Reading the halfway mark between 4 and 5 inches as 4 1/4, mixing up half-inch and quarter-inch marks.
  • Ignoring the key on a picture graph, so 4 pictures worth 5 votes each read as 4 votes.
  • Lining up the object with the 1 on the ruler, so every length comes out 1 inch too long.

Practice makes perfect

Bobby's Math Club has practice problems that adapt to your child’s level, each with a detailed explanation and an easy-to-follow video, so your child can build confidence in these skills one step at a time.

Words your child will hear

data
Information collected, like a list of measurements or votes.
scale
The numbers on a graph that tell how much each space is worth.
bar graph
A graph that uses bars of different lengths to show and compare amounts.
picture graph
A graph that uses pictures to show amounts.
key
The part of a picture graph that tells how many each picture stands for.
line plot
A number line with X marks above it to show how many times each measurement appears.
half inch
One of 2 equal parts of an inch.
quarter inch
One of 4 equal parts of an inch; also called a fourth.
