Eureka Math Grade 3, Module 7: Geometry and Measurement Word Problems
In this unit, the year closes with shapes and perimeter. Your child sorts quadrilaterals by their attributes, finds the perimeter of shapes by adding side lengths, and compares rectangles with the same perimeter but different areas. Two-step word problems tie it all together, using the multiplication, area, and measuring skills built across the year.

What is my child learning in Module 7?
- Solving two-step problems about fences, frames, and borders that mix perimeter with addition, subtraction, or multiplication. Learn more: Story problems with two steps
- Measuring perimeter, the length around a shape, and finding the missing side of a shape when the perimeter is known. Learn more: Perimeter: the distance around a shape
- Comparing quadrilaterals by their sides and angles, and explaining why a square belongs with both rectangles and rhombuses. Learn more: Sorting four-sided shapes into families
Sample questions to try together
These are real questions from our practice. Tap the speaker to hear one read aloud, or the light bulb for a hint, and talk about the answer together.
Question 1 of 3
A bakery made 500 cookies. They sold 235 on Saturday and 190 on Sunday. How many are left?
- 75
- 85
- 175
How you can help
- Use string to go around a cereal box or placemat, then straighten it and measure the length with a ruler.
- Ask your child to explain why a square cracker is also a rectangle, using its sides and corners as evidence.
- Pose a two-step border problem, like a 6-inch by 4-inch card with 30 inches of ribbon to go around it, and ask how much ribbon is left (10 inches).
Where kids can get stuck
- Finding the perimeter but stopping there, when the question asks how much ribbon or fence is left over.
- Counting every square in a shape when the question asks for the distance around it.
- Thinking a turned shape becomes a different shape, so a tilted square is no longer a square.
Practice makes perfect
Bobby's Math Club has practice problems that adapt to your child’s level, each with a detailed explanation and an easy-to-follow video, so your child can build confidence in these skills one step at a time.
Words your child will hear
- perimeter
- How far it is around the edge of a flat shape.
- quadrilateral
- A flat shape with exactly 4 straight sides and 4 corners.
- attribute
- Something about a shape you can check, like how many sides it has.
- side length
- The measurement of one side of a shape.
- rhombus
- A quadrilateral whose 4 sides are all the same length.
- rectangle
- A four-sided shape whose corners are all square corners.
- two-step problem
- A word problem that needs two operations to solve.
