Eureka Math Grade 5, Module 6: Problem Solving with the Coordinate Plane
In this unit, your child finishes the year on the coordinate plane. They plot ordered pairs, draw lines through them, generate two number patterns from two rules and graph them together, and use the grid to solve real-world problems. After volume and area, it pulls the year together in problems that ask children to read a graph, find a pattern, and explain what it means.

What is my child learning in Module 6?
- Generating two patterns from rules like add 2 and add 4, then graphing the pairs to see the points form a line. Learn more: Comparing two number patterns on a grid
- Plotting ordered pairs on a coordinate plane, drawing lines through them, and naming points where lines cross. Learn more: Finding points on a grid, like (6, 3)
- Solving real-world problems on a grid, like reading how far a runner went after 3 minutes, and explaining each point. Learn more: Plotting real-life points on a grid
Sample questions to try together
These are real questions from our practice. Tap the speaker to hear one read aloud, or the light bulb for a hint, and talk about the answer together.
Question 1 of 3
Ana and Luis both start with $0. Each week, Ana saves $5 and Luis saves $10. When Ana has $15, how much does Luis have?
- $25
- $40
- $30
How you can help
- Sketch a map of your neighborhood on graph paper with home at the origin. On a walk, ask your child to name each stop as an ordered pair.
- Make two lists with your child, one counting by 3s and one by 6s from 0. Plot pairs like (3, 6) and (6, 12), and ask what the straight line shows.
- Graph a short walk together, with minutes on one axis and blocks walked on the other. Ask your child what a point like (6, 3) tells you: 3 blocks after 6 minutes.
Where kids can get stuck
- Putting quantities on the wrong axes, with minutes up the side and distance along the bottom, reversing every point.
- Describing a point only as “3 across and 6 up” rather than what it means in the problem.
- Pairing terms from different steps of the two patterns, so the plotted points no longer fall on a line.
Practice makes perfect
Bobby's Math Club has practice problems that adapt to your child’s level, each with a detailed explanation and an easy-to-follow video, so your child can build confidence in these skills one step at a time.
Words your child will hear
- coordinate plane
- A grid made by two number lines that cross at 0, used to locate points.
- origin
- The point (0, 0), where the two axes of a grid meet.
- x-axis
- The horizontal line of a coordinate grid.
- y-axis
- The vertical line of a coordinate grid.
- ordered pair
- Two numbers in parentheses, like (3, 5), that name one point on a grid.
- pattern
- A list of numbers that follows a rule, like 0, 3, 6, 9.
- rule
- The instruction that makes a pattern, like “add 3 each time.”
- corresponding terms
- Numbers in the same position in two patterns, like the third number in each list.
